Lesvos

Who ever starts to describe Lesvos, finds himself in front of a big problem. He can't use common expressions or slogans that are mostly used to describe other islands. And this, because Lesvos doesn't have only one interest site to attract the interest. Its a puzzle of landscapes, with many and unique natural beauties, rare geological monuments, breath cutting landscape swaps, amazing archeological treasures, houses of perfect architecture aesthetic, natural parks, walking roads, museums, exceptional local kitchen.
All that and many more, make all of those that come to Lesvos, to fall in love with it and speak only the best. Here in comparison with other touristic islands, tourism isn't yet the main profession. It coexist with the activities of agriculture, fishing, manufacturing, and this is reflected in the behavior of people, who still have their original identity and warm character. Here the rhythms are still slow and the flavors real.
Lesvos is mountain type, although it has many flat lands and it belongs in the complex of north-east Aegean. Its distance from Turkish coast is very small. Its land mass is 1.630 square km, 370km coast line and around 105.000 residents. With Limno and Agio Eustratio, they consist the county of Lesvos that has as capital the city of Mitilini. The shape of the island is like a leaf, with two shallow natural harbors, Kalloni and Gera. Most important mountains are Lepetimnos, Olympus and Ordimnos.

Special characteristics

The volcano explosion that took place 20 mil. years ago, split it in two different worlds, with landscape swaps that leaves the visitor without breath. The east side is full of flora with pine trees and olive trees, that go down until sea. On the west part, the landscape reminds something from Kiklades and... "far west".
In comparison with other islands that big cities devastated the small towns and villages, Lesvos thankfully kept most of them intact. Another good coincidence for Lesvos is because the after war population reduction, it evaded the all around presence of concrete. Thus most of its places are still keeping their "color", architecture and nature, appearing like a painting with their traditional house roofs and roads being surrounded by olive trees.
Impressive element of Lesvos is its many hot water springs - one quarter of Greek hot water springs are located here - , the natural parks that host thousand of birds and fishes, the unique petrified forest, the famous monasteries and of course the living spiritual tradition that is always present in all kind of festivals, even in the smallest villages.

How to reach Lesvos

Lesvos is connected via sea and air. Bellow you can find the most common ways of reaching it with your preferred transportation.

Sea Lines

Mitilini's harbor is connected all year with Piraeus and Rafina, as long as with Thessaloniki, Limno, St Eustratio, Samothraki, Aleksandroupoli and Kavala.
Mitilini is also connected with boat with Hio, Samo. Last it connects with small boats with Aivali and Dikeli, cities on the Turkish coast nearby.
The ships leave at morning and return late at afternoon. Duration of trip is 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Air Lines

Mitilini is connected every day via air lines with Athens , Thessalonika and Hio. The companies that fulfill the trips are Olympics Airlines and Aegean. Also it's connected with Creta with Sky express. The airport distance from the city is at 8km.

Lesvos is blessed with so many things that you absolutely have to see at least the following.

Mitilini's Castle


From the biggest and most important castles of eastern Meditteranean. Its origins start from archaic ages, continue to classical and dark ages and reach ottoman era.

Ancient Mitilini's Theater


It is still saved at the last construction phase of the monument, which is from the after-Roman era. Its shape is round with 24,20m diameter.

Moria's Aquenduct

One of the most important technical constructions of Mediterranean. Build by the Romans for water transportation from the base of mountain Olympus until Mitilini in a distance of 26km!.
In Moria, a little bit outside of Mitilini, you can admire a part of the arc from this Roman aquenduct that is 170m long with 17 arcs.

Museums of Theofilou & Teriad

Two priceless gifts.. The first with works of the famous painter and the second with works of the biggest modern painters of the 20th century.

Ancient Temple of Klopedis

Close to Agia Paraskeui. The remnants of the building (6th century B.C.) are unique in Hellas. From all the remnants, the reasonable assumption is that the region hosted one of the most important temples of Lesvos.

Petrified forest


Created 16 to 20 million years ago, its one of the most beautiful geological monuments in world scale. It covers 150 square km of land and it is consisted from standing and fallen petrified trees. Besides the trees, perfectly preserved inside the volcano ground, you can find leafs, roots and fruits.

Ancient Temple of Meson

Close to Agia Paraskevi it was found during excavations the remnants of a big temple that are aged from 300 B.C.
Its speculated that there was the temple, on which, when Achae first came, established a common worship temple for their gods, Zeus, Ira and Dionysus.
